Blazingly fast... another fine product from InnSyst Software.
What is DiskList?
DiskList is a new way of cataloging media onto your hard disk. Unlike other catalogers, DiskList scans removable or fixed media (SyQuests, Zips, EZ's, CD-ROMs, external and internal hard drives, MO drives etc.) at high speed, storing their contents into a DiskList Database Document™ contained in any folder you specify. Several folders can be created to hold catalog data documents on various types of media - for example, a folder for CD's, one for SyQuests, one for externals, etc., if so desired. You can organize your catalog folders as you wish, or slam everything into the one supplied - but at least you have a choice!
The Database Documents™ produced are, on average, between 40% to 95% smaller than any other cataloging program we've seen so far. Our aim in writing DiskList was: get the maximum information and flexibility into the minimum amount of hard disk space. Most other cataloging application's documents consume ever-increasing amounts of valuable space on hard drives. Try comparing DiskList's file sizes with those of Disk Wizard, Disk Tracker, or any other cataloging program (see below...), before choosing to register our product. Plus you might want to consider DiskList's functionality against that of the competition...
A Few Special Features of DiskList
DiskList has a user-friendly interface, with toolbar icons for the most frequently-used commands to save trips to the menu bar. It can launch applications or open documents directly from the DiskList window if the containing volume is on-line. (Or even tell you if it isn't!) Even StuffIt and Compact Pro archives are scanned, allowing you to see what is in the archives, and StuffIt files can be decompressed on-the-fly if you have any StuffIt decompression program on your hard disk. But the best feature of all is the small size of the DiskList Database Documents™! (See paragraph below.)
Installing DiskList
Double-click the installer icon, then click the "Continue" button at the bottom of the splash screen. The installer then presents a Custom Install screen. Choose either Standard Install, that includes a sample DiskList catalog of MacFormat CD-ROM #43 ready to use, or pick the Minimal Installation, that excludes the catalog. (The catalog document is 248k in size: the catalog document for the same CD-ROM produced by Disk Wizard is 482k, by Disk Tracker 356k. Get the message?)
DiskList installs a folder in any location you specify that contains the DiskList application, a stand-alone manual named "Double Click Me First", a "How to Register" text file, the "PayForMe!" registration program, and - if you chose a Standard Install - a folder named "DiskList® Catalog" that includes the MacFormat CD-ROM #43 database document. With Minimal Installation, you just get the empty Catalog folder. An alias to DiskList itself is placed in the Apple Menu Items to allow fast access to the program.
A full install requires approximately 1.1Mb of hard disk space - 410k for the program, 252k for the stand-alone manual (can be deleted after reading), 248k for the Catalog, 135k for the PayForMe! program and 45k for the "How to Register" text file: the last two items can, of course, also be deleted after registration. The DiskList program needs 1000k of free RAM to run - give it more if you want it to perform even quicker!
Shareware
DiskList is not free, it is shareware. If you keep it and find it useful, please register it, as this will keep us improving the software while keeping your software costs down, as it is not expensive. See the text file and the "PayForMe!" program for registration details and cost.
We have a policy of not crippling our software. However, each time you open an unregistered copy of DiskList, our Aggravating Splash Screen™ - abbreviated by us to ASS! - appears, that needs dismissing before DiskList's window opens. Registered versions open much more conveniently straight into the window. (We have to give you some incentive to register!) Other than that, DiskList is fully functional. If you really can't afford the registration fee, just send us a letter giving us your opinion on DiskList, with any comments on how you think it could be improved.
Thank You
For what? Well, for taking the time to try out DiskList. If you like it, please tell us when you register, and include any comments you wish to make. Do look at the stand-alone manual - the last page of it gives brief details of some of our other software that may be of interest to you.
